Friday-Sunday, Sept. 18-20 –

Greater Danbury Irish Festival

Sept. 18: 5-10 p.m.; Sept. 19: 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sept. 20: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Twenty years ago, Gerry Curran, president of the Danbury Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), had a dream. Curran’s vision was that there was a need for an Irish Festival in the Danbury area to present and perpetuate Irish music and culture.

Curran enlisted Sharon Higgins, president of the Danbury Division of the Ladies of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, to join him in encouraging members of the Danbury AOH to work to establish an Irish Festival. One of the goals for the annual festival would be to generate enough profits to fund the establishment of an Irish Center in Danbury.

The festival became a reality in 1995, when the Greater Danbury Irish Festival made its debut at Rogers Park. The festival subsequently relocated to Ives Concert Park and continued there annually until 2011.

As hoped, festival profits were sufficient to open the Greater Danbury Irish Center on Lake Avenue in 2009.

For a few years, the AOH held a smaller festival at the center. But in 2015, the Irish Festival will return to Ives Concert Park from Friday, Sept. 18, through Sunday, Sept. 20.

Enjoy the Irish ambiance at Ives Concert Park, and take a musical trip to the Emerald Isle!!
